If you reside in some parts of the United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America, now’s an excellent time to prepare for this gorgeous celestial event. The James Webb Space Telescope – in all probability the single coolest digicam ever made – just recorded some fascinating observations of an exoplanet one hundred twenty lightyears away. The planet K2-18 b is more than eight times as massive as Earth and is hypothesized to have an ocean of liquid water. Early analysis suggests that the molecule dimethyl sulfide could present in the planet’s atmosphere – a molecule which, at least on Earth, is exclusively produced by residing things! (Mostly phytoplankton.) Additional evaluation is needed to confirm this finding, but there’s an opportunity that we simply detected an indication of life exterior Earth.
