New research released during World Breastfeeding Week highlights significant long-term health advantages for infants, ranging from improved gut bacteria resilience to a reduced risk of ADHD symptoms. Scientists from institutions across Europe and Asia have published findings suggesting that breastfeeding influences sleep patterns and microbial development well into adulthood.

The World Health Organization notes that breastfeeding remains a cost-effective investment for nations, though economic evidence is often overlooked by donors. The Global Breastfeeding Collective observed slight improvements in rates last year but warned that environments supporting feeding “lags dangerously behind.”

Gut Bacteria and Long-Term Health

A study from the Technical University of Denmark and Rigshospitalet found that sugars in breast milk play a critical role in shaping gut bacteria. Specifically, human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) help determine which bacteria survive when infants transition to solid food.

The research, published in Nature Communications, reveals a previously unknown mechanism. It enables specific fiber-utilizing bifidobacteria to flourish during the weaning period. This phase is essential because it establishes the microbiome that individuals carry into adulthood.

While these findings establish a clear biological link between early nutrition and adult microbiomes, the practical application for infant formula remains complex. Manufacturers may attempt to replicate these sugars synthetically, but the dynamic nature of breast milk suggests a complete match is difficult to achieve in a lab setting.

Researchers urge mothers to continue breastfeeding during the transition to solid foods to maximize this developmental effect. The study involved culturing bacteria in laboratory environments that mimicked the human gut to verify these metabolic processes.

Links to ADHD and Sleep Duration

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) risks may also be influenced by feeding methods. A study from the University of Bergen analyzed data from 37,600 families in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study.

The team found that children exclusively breastfed for up to six months exhibited fewer ADHD symptoms at ages three, five, and eight. The association was strongest at ages three and five for both boys and girls, though it weakened slightly by age eight.

Donor funding for breastfeeding programs remains far below needs, and most countries fail to guarantee workplace protections. This lack of structural support complicates the ability of mothers to maintain exclusive breastfeeding for the recommended six months.

Sleep patterns present another area of benefit. Research from the University of Toyama in Japan examined over 82,000 children to determine if breastfeeding affects sleep duration. Data indicates that infants who were exclusively breastfed for six months had an 8.8% risk of short sleep duration.

In contrast, babies fed only formula faced a 12.2% risk. Sleep is vital for cognitive development, though the study focused primarily on the duration of rest rather than the quality of dreaming. Parents often believe breastfed infants sleep less, but researchers call this a misperception.
